Oddly enough that looks like a 3.5" floppy drive.

Correct. 3.5" drives were around during the mid-80s, however, so this is consistent with most of the history of this house, suggesting this was purchased before Mrs. Salomon died.

If it's not a 3.5 it could be a 3" - they were around in the 80's and used by Brother, Epson and Sinclair / Amstrad / Timex.

Negative on that, there were other diskettes 3.5" around. Although you are also correct about the 3" drives.

Neat piece of equipment. I bet those disks could hold some clues, if they're still good.

That's a very excellent point, DopeNessMonster. I'll get back to you on that idea.

We once 'borrowed' the master 3.5" from the telephone exchange at Crookston Castle School - very interesting.
Full dialing directory and divert times for the phones. Made sense of some things we had wondered about.

If this guy was really nuts, I wonder if he may have kept a journal or something on that thing.

I checked some of the disks, actually, but most of them are unreadable. They're double density floppies, so they're probably quite old. There must be read errors all over it. I wonder if there is a way to just make a disc image, even though the computer can't seem to read the file system at all.

You ought to be able to make a sector-by-sector or even a bit-by-bit image. The Linux F.I.R.E. distribution at http://fire.dmzs.com/ may have some tools available for that.
