Description
Railtech ponders the sign. We didn't actually go in this room, but we the whole building must have been full of asbestos, not just this room....

bored being: Asbestos was a very popular salad topping. You just added water and served. Very delicious and great for those lovely growing cancer cells. ;-)

Seriously, that stuff was used for many years in buildings as insulation and fire proofing. It could be woven into a fabric and is fire resistant. The reason it was banned was that it was linked to lung cancer and other nasty illnesses. The fibres would become friable when the coating was broken, worn or otherwise disturbed. The fibres would then go into the air and be breathed in. Pretty nasty stuff!

Also, the comments to your question, I am surprised you don't know what it is. This is one of the biggest hazards in older buildings. Along with lead.

"Nasty illnesses" = "Nasty respiratory illnesses"

Yeah, that's why I wear a respirator nomatter what old place I go into, it pays to be safe. It also helps to wear coats with hoods, but that's just my way of doing things.

Oh no, the asbestos got him. He will now have to live the rest of his life with severe pixel-itis.

Why didn't he read the sign and wear a respirator? WHHHHYYYYYYY???

I went in this building with my father, when I was about 9. He was director of construction and administration at UA and his building was attached to this one, but I think if the asbestos risk was that bad, we would have word respirators.

The dangers of asbestos didn't become known until later when people started dying and stuff.
