It's amazing how much tooling and stuff is left here.

I used my 20 year old Fuji to get this scan; the blockhouse in the foreground is the shower room; this area is the tooling area; this is only the first of the catwalks; the mill is built into the hillside, each floor has a foundation.
As per your comment, there is stuff left everywhere. Need a fire extinguisher? NL is your source, these things are EVERYWHERE.

Tons of tooling left but what draws us to this place is the fact that it's related to history a hundred years apart and that it's in a county that has VERY few residents and that includes tourists. Visit in the winter as we did and you will feel very alone and at the same time connected to a rich history associated with the Adirondacks. See my Adirondak post as well as Bizzy's "Aiden lair " post. Incredible history here. In addition, this is near the source of the Hudson River!

Alone? Consider you are at least 15 miles from the nearest house. Consider that you are in the center of the Adirondack Mountains, probably some of the most unspoiled landscape in the country... you could literally scream for hours and no one would hear you!

Yeah, that always makes me think when going up there. It's kinda funny though how many people go up and park at the gate; some tourists, others just like to park at the end of the access road and walk the dog; It's as if they are drawn to the place for some reason even if the don't explore it.
I haven't been up there in a while, maybe it's time.
The only time I went alone was for some evening shots. Maybe it's time to break out and go solo.
But one screwup and you are toast out here. Fall into the pits, fall into the water treatment plant building. They'll find your skeleton in fifteen years or so.

I've walked around here alone, but Dukes is right, you have to be incredibly careful. THIS IS A MINE and the buildings have be neglected for years now. One wrong step, or a boneheaded move and you are a skeleton waiting to be found. Have fun! :oP

That's one of the nice things about more traveled sites -- someone is more likely to find you, and getting arrested is probably better than getting skeletonized after slowly starving to death. Hmmm... that's a nice thought to end the night on. Maybe Dukes and Samurai should institute a buddy system when entering and exiting Tahawus -- call your buddy when you're going in, and if you don't call him back in four or five hours, your buddy calls the cops. :-)

Upon reflection, though, "the cops" in that area probably consist of a good ol' boy sheriff who, upon hearing that someone might be lost in Tahawus, would say, "I gotta search the whole goddamn mine for one dumb sunnavabitch? Aw, hell... I gotta stop by the donut shop first. He can wait ten minutes..." ;-)

Actually, MatC, this is the southwestern corner of Essex County (which is the 2nd largest county in NY). The sheriffs for Essex County are in Elizabethtown, which is a good hour, hour and a half drive from Tahawus. :o) It would more likely be a State Trooper from either Long Lake or Schroon Lake... I've tried to contact the 'caretaker', but he hasn't been frequenting railroad.net lately. I wanted to get some pictures of the old firetruck and speeders that he got hold of.
