I have thought for some time that the lab was contaminated with radiation from the x-ray equipment on the next level of the lab-- hey the machines at one time at least were marked radioactive.

seriously, would these machines 'leak' after being out in the elements for years? Is an x-ray machine containing that much material for it to be contaminating a room? Just curious...

I've never been to Tawahus, but ... If there were machines marked "radioactive" and "shelter rooms" ... I wonder whether some step in the iron or titanium extraction somehow caused naturally occurring radioactive elements to be concentrated. I did a web search and found out: "Uranium, thorium, and radium commonly occur in titanium ore and monazite occurs in sands from which the titanium is extracted" http://www.epa.gov/radiation/tenorm/sources.htm

Samurai, I honestly do not know but have been interested in checking with a geiger counter. NL/Chronos was probably responsible enough to remove the radioactive material-- I hope. I was sad to see that anyone else had even found this place. I have noticed from some pictures that a number of items once there are now missing.

i was there a couple of days ago, just sitting on the west wall above the 'pond' and in a spanse of two hours, there must've been 10-15 cars roll up to the gate, stop, turn around and head back toward the road up to Adirondac and the trailhead... it's there, but only a few people ever venture inside. Unfortunately, not everyone has the same scruples or ethics that most of us here share... it's not like we can rope this off and cover it with plastic to preserve for just us, as much as i like that idea. The decay continues.

If you want to keep no ue'ers out make up an official looking sign saying the EPA has discovered dangerous levels of radiation at the site, post it and leave :)
make sure you put a date on the sign too.

Xray machines (like you find in hospitals) use tungsten for their radiation source. The tungsten is not "active" unless electricity is passing through it.
Even if the tungsten casing were to decay, the entire radioactive tube is filled with motor oil to prevent it from overheating during use.
