  --Flash of insight-- How wide were those shafts with the key slots? We found a bunch in the basement of my school that looked just like that, but without any attachments?

  Each shaft was probably about four feet across.

  okay. because my high school had a number of those key-holed shafts sitting in its basement, but they were nearly 20 feet long. Hardened like a bit** and weighed a ton, too. We're a military school, so they were probably naval drive shafts from the Great Lakes naval base
