The coax terminals spoke "3270" protocol..page at a time, collect the input in a form, send the whole thing to the computer when user hit 'send'. Reduced I/O interrupts that way. There was a version of the protocol to support printers like this.

I think this is an IBM 4232 printer. PITA to adjust the head gap on. A lot of trial and error...
