Does not look very hydraulic. I thought elevators used plain, vanilla electric motors?

Depends on the elevator. Those in taller buildings (i.e. cable elevators) use a motor mounted at the top of the shaft. Shorter buildings - 4 stories or less usually - will have an elevator car lifted by a hydraulic piston, just like a car lift in a mechanic's shop. Those elevators typically have a hydraulic pump of some sort.

You rarely see anything except hydraulic elevators until you get into buildings of 4 stories or more. This mall was 2, 3 if you count the basement.
