Description
The turbines and boilers were salvaged, but there was still some interesting stuff to see. We collected some coal from outside the building and used it to heat the room where we slept in. Burning wood is not an option in Svalbard.

This is a beautiful find. I am researching visiting Svalbard next year and am looking at visiting these abandoned Russian settlements. How did you access this one? I know Pyramiden they reccomend a boat ride or snow-mobile ride over. I don't like the guided tour idea of Pyramiden, but love the look of this one! Did it require a guide to enter this city? Were most of the buildings accessible? Did you bring a gun with you?

I made my first trip to Colesbukta by foot, but later drove there on snowmobile. It's about 25 km away from Longyearbyen, either up Longyearbreen and via Fardalen, or up to Platåfjellet and along the coastline.

You don't need a guide to visit Colesbukta (or Pyramiden, for that matter), but then you need to take care of all the logistics by yourself. If you don't have previous experience of Svalbard, it might be a good idea to bring someone who has a bit local knowledge. I've driven to Colesbukta alone several times, but if things go wrong, it's still quite far from the settlement. Luckily there's cellphone coverage.

All buildings are open. Remember to close the doors when you leave.

I always had a rifle with me. It would be stupid to not bring one - last time they were doing a building inventory in Colesbukta, there was a polar bear on the shore.
