This sucks...I went to see a film here just about a year ago and was commenting to my friend how much I love this theatre, and how it was one of the last of the old ones when an usher broke the news to me re: the demolition...sometimes I hate Toronto...only sometimes...

The theatre was demolished when the advocates for buildings being accessible for those in wheelchairs complained that the main auditorium was not accessible. An exemption due the building age, beauty, and historical value could not be acquired. And the owners decided that demolition would be cheaper than renovation.

"And the owners decided that demolition would be cheaper than renovation"

that is the biggest lie. ever. that is said here all the time.

If renovation is so expensive, then why do casinos rip down buildings here, and then go hog wild on marble tiles, gold plated statues, etc etc? Lies! Lies! Lies!

I remember hearing an employee being interviewed on TV saying it would cost more than $1 million to add wheelchair accessability....Not sure if that included gold plating.

it is true as an elevator would be added and elevators alone are 500,000 and up. also to re do some structural sections to suport an elevator shaft plus electrical and all new entrance way ramps plus then electric door openers that release with fire alarms it is costly million as oppose to 350,000 that the paid for demolition plus in return made 100,00 profit on sale of lot its hard to pic option one as you and I and the rest of the UER community admire these oldies, we dont have the budget to preseve them and money talks.
