I can remember seeing several movies there over the years; it really was a gorgeous theatre. It's sickening that these photos are the only things left.

well we still have the loews but for how long, the auditorium is landlocked and the storefront lobby is now a footlocker, a shame considering when the loews became a multiplex they took care to not ruin the decoration of the auditorium

Tribefan, I passed by the Loews last night and they are doing working in it. Don't know what they are doing though (door was locked) but it looks like they are keeping some of the original plaster work and stuff... but don't know what it's gonna turn out to be...

yeah but no matter what is done the fact its an alley jumper makes it very hard to re use, the side door is a very un graceful entrance

yes, but at least, the cinema still exist in a very small way, it's true, but it's still there... with a great paint job, it could be saved and restored in a few years down the road... at least anyway, it's gonna be heated this winter.

i hope so, the orpheum or was it the strand was lost in that way its lobby was torn down when the widened mc gill college but the auditorium on cathcart street survived into the late 80s, "preserved" but without a ste catherine street presence she was torn down without a wimper from the heritage people. The loews in my mind also is starting to be facing this fate. its chunk of land is pretty valuable and now without a presence on ste catherine its pretty much out of mind

I read in the Gazoo the other week that the Loews interior is being redone as an upscale gym, with a new side entrance to be added on Mansfield.

yeah i went by tonight and well i saw the plasterwork being painted white, a trifle better than that gaudy paintjob it had as a multiplex!
