SHIP KNOCKS BRIDGE OUT 'Damage to the Morrissey Bridge is considered to be extensive following the approximate 4:44 am accident Thursday in which the German ship John M. struck the bridge. This photo shows the ship still resting against the side of the bridge less than an hour later. The mangled guardrails and damaged main deck are on the turn span of the bridge. The ship was on its third trip to the Miramichi and was leaving Newcastle for Hamburg via Halifax when the mishap occurred.'

Back then horses were still in use (although very few) so they had high guard rails so if at any point a horse was spooked he wasn't able to jump off the bridge.
