The only Hewitt I know of that served in WWI from Alberta was Cecil Norman Hewitt, born 1898 purchased land in alberta around 1916 and died during the war Sep. 28th 1918. He served with the 10th Battalion, Alberta Regiment. Would it be possible for the house to be abandoned that long?

You could well be right, though I imagine others would have lived there since.
