Here is a view inside the shaft building. The firepit in the foreground looks to be possibly related to the assaying process. Maybe Jonsered could clarify what its purpose is.

You are almost certainly right. Looks like a crude attempt at a smelter, most likely for determining ore content. Heat up the obvious silver bearing ore, melt it (silver) down to a button, thus determining roughly the sivler content in each ton of ore. Thats nice man. You don't see too many of these any more.
