Yes, they should have kept them red! Wow, they look so fancy that way.

Getting transit nerd here, but the first ones classified as G1 were red right until retirement. Only the subsequent classes (G2, G3, G4) were unpainted aluminum and weighed less. There was also an H1 car painted into an experimental red/black/gold paint.

Still, the Gloucester trains were awesome and I wish I could remember them. I was only 4 when they were retired.

Whole bunch of info on the stuff I just talked about here:

My mom remembers the red subway cars. Crazy. I had no idea. I totally agree they should have stayed red, reminds me of the UK for some reason.

Teh Gloucesters! There's still 4 of these left on TTC property as retired work cars, and 2 at the Halton County Radial Ry museum.

You could also open the windows in those cars.

I thought you could still open the windows a little bit if you wanted to. Or am I thinking of something else? Also, I'm surprised no transit nerd has been able to tell us what station this is!

The conductor guy can at least... they always have their head out of the damn trains.

No, today's subways in Toronto do not have windows which can open.

Stupid me.. I was actually thinking of the streetcars and buses.

I think that's Union but I'm not 100% sure. The destination sign says Eglinton, so we're probably dealing with the original Union-Eglinton Yonge line. It's a centre island platform as well, which narrows the choices down to Union and Eglinton only. Finally, I believe that Eglinton always had white vitrolite tiles.

So... I'm gonna go with Union station, obviously Northbound.

It's impossible that it's Union: this link confirms it.
Posted by Stewie 3/16/2009 9:51 AM | remove
Don't you mean that the site confirms that it IS Union?
Posted by Air 3/22/2009 11:15 PM | remove
according to that diagram it could be main, or even keele.
Posted by Stewie 3/24/2009 10:53 PM | remove
Nope. Main and Keele don't have island platforms. The destination sign also belongs to the Yonge-University line (Spadina wouldn't have existed at the point when Eglinton was a terminus)

Yes, I meant that it has to be Union.

I think my dad has this exact same postcard!

I used to like riding in the Gloucester cars. They olny had one power pick up point I think. When the third rail would change the lights would go out sequencially down the whole train for a half second.

A great website, UK based, about the TTC`s Gloucester cars. Images include the cars being delivered by ship from the UK, and sadly being dismantled as well.
