It's even more painful to look at now that the remnants of the box office are exposed. Ugh.

I love old theatres but I would volunteer to be the one to lean on the front wall in order to have the entire structure collapse cause this is a case of "acharnement thérapeutique". The patient is dead and has been dead for a long time. Can we just put it to rest really...

don't anyone kid themselves. The City plays a role in letting things rot every bit as much as the private owners. If we lived in a city that actually cared about it's heritage the owners would have been ordered to do some maintenance. Only happens in other places though.

well I feel like the city wants to get that block ripped down even if they have to wait 30 years for the building to rot down just to stop people from protesting.

yeah well I suppose... I mean remember when they had the barricade around so you wouldn't be hit by bricks? That was before the tin wall was installed....

I blame all of this block on the Bronfmans more than the city really. City just didn't had the balls to kick the Bronfman's ass, that's all. But since the city is now 19 micro-cities and the urbanism service has been dismantled, well, Montreal doesn't have any balls anymore. It's more like a castrated 6-month old puppy now. Cute, cuddly (especially with developpers), little, still pee on the floor when its scared but that's it. Never bites. The Bronfmans got the money to do something with that block. But they don't give a damn about it and are just sitting on it until either the city buys it from them for big money or they can redevelop it into condos and so on for mucho dollars... Not gonna happen anytime soon.

to be fair to Phyllis Lambert (Joan Of Architecture) she is quite different from the rest of the family. She has done a lot of preservation work in the city - the CCA building being a glorious example.

do they only own the theater or do they own the entire block?

the entire block, the building next door was proptly cleared out and abandonned right after they purchased it. As far as Phyllis lambert goes, ask anyone how it is to work with/for her and you will see her true colors

I've never met her, but she seems like an A-1 bitch from what I understand. Although granting us the CCA absolves a LOT of sins. Hell, I'd even kiss her. If I had to.

Well, sometimes a bitch is good, it s not like she is sunning sweat shops in Asia. I can admire an arsehole who does good things, like Picasso, but not arseholes whose bottom line is just more stuff.

really? i know the carling o'keefe brands were black label, o'keefe, o'keefe light, miller highlife carlsburg. But stella i thought was a recent arrival here. molson briefly brewed EX and canadian/laurentide at the okeefe brewery while the molson brewery was being renovated. i doubt stella was brewed by o'keefe as everything i can find says it was only brewed outside of europe after 1990

They tear down buildings such as The Spectrum (and half the city block around it) and Bens, yet they leave this up years past it's salvage date. If they had begun restoration back in the 80's, I'm sure this place would have been a really great theatre. Now it's too late... As nostra said, York on the otherhand still had a fighting chance when it was torn down, this building sadly has nothing left of it to save. :(
