A few minutes later, I risk life and limb to get to the door on the left. I slipped on ice, I stood on uncertain footing, I dodged rusty nails to get into that dark hallway...

... and found out that it led to another, much safer entrance on the right, behind the stairs.

D'OH.

At least it wasn't a case of the paramedics taking you out through that much safer entrance on a stretcher. ;-)

Yeah, but aren't the paramedics better trained at handling stretchers? At least with the medical emergencies I've seen, the paramedics always dealt with the stretchers while the firefighters stood by in case further assistance was needed.

And I don't think doctors and nurses would risk their lives going into a building to get out the victim.

I'd crawl, roll, hobble just to get out. I really wouldn't want to have the paramedics come to get me, but when there is no choice there really isn't any other option.
