Here you can see the bridges opening. Notice that the strausz bridge has not 1 but 4 main turning points (as has a drawbridge), but also that it is essentially two bridges in one: one to to transfer the massive force of the counterweight onto the bridge. The drawbridge seems so much simpler in construction, but i suppose that it requires techniques that were not available for such a span at the time the strausz bridge was constructed. Also note that this strausz bridge is special as the counterweight is fixed with the bridge - in others I've seen it is hinged and stays parallel to the ground, even almost resting on the ground when fully opened.
