The chopped-down telephone pole once was a support for a high frequency radio communications antenna that the Terminal Building (in background, behind the bush) used to communicate with ships, aircraft and other shore installations (like the Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Center at NAS Moffett Field) engaged in the detection & monitoring of Soviet submarines. NAVFAC Point Sur had the static radio callsign "LISTLESS" assigned to it, plus they would have used classified, tactical callsigns during operational ASW sorties.
