yea, it is just sooooo fucking stupid, dumb, that this place is going down. I mean, it shows the city does not respect anything. and they don't!

charlie, its the same everywhere, there is a "moignon" of the 30 over here on the south shore where they expropriated 20 houses in 91. they still have not used the land and with the new "trace" its not going to be used!

not all the time though- The Cirque/Loto Quebec super casino was well fought off by the Point community groups. And you haven't heard of a new location because I bet you Cirque saw a lot of bad publicity with that partnership. Remember that they bought into a Las Vegas that has been promoting "family" values for some years now and it has become one of the fastest growing cities in the US as such. Maybe they didnt want the gambling label in their "hometown"? One of the problems with The Spectrum was that it doesn't have a lot of residential neighbors which makes it a lot easier to dispose of despite the fact that it was located just about right in the Jazz Festival. One of the biggest shames of this whole thing is that there were not a lot of "celebrities" hopping on any kind of a Save The Spectrum bandwagon which often sends a message all round (check the High Line in New York City). No residents, no intense organizing.

Of course in a perfect world Ben's would still be open......at least as some kind of a museum to mid 20th century restaurant culture.

Let's not forget that the Spectrum, from a technical point of view, was a poorly designed house for performing arts. There is no backstage space, no wings to put technical equipment, all the equipment needs to be lifted on stage and the storage area for tech cases and so on is located half way between the basement and ground level and levers needs to be cranked to gain access to it every time. It's super crappy. It's also designed like a squared box, making the acoustic quite dry.
So although some artists really liked the Spectrum cause it was quite a small venue and audience is very close to the artists (which is quite a treat for artists when they get a good crowd), many artists also disliked it much cause it's small, technically limiting the capacity and sound needs to be balanced quite well by the equipment in order not to sound crappy...And it's abominable for full acoustic shows (I mean no mic at all).

Some friends of mine had completely different view on the acoustic, and stated this place as a pretty good one. A completely subjective point of view I guess.

I've been to a few concerts there, and it's just plain sad to see that the mayor of Montreal wants to created an "Entertainment District" in that area, and the first thing that happens is that they close down The Spectrum, which is right in the heart of an already vibrant Entertainment District. And they're going to replace it with offices and a Best Buy.. Umm, there's already a Future Shop less than a block away, do we really need two stores owned by the same company that sell identical items within a few hundred yards of each other?!? Anyways, I signed the petition as well as 15,463 other Montrealers that don't want to see this place demolished. (I agree that Bens should have been preserved as well!)

Flamenco? I saw a guitarist and a dancer there, she seemed okay with it but maybe when she got back stage there was a huge ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH SOMEBODY PULL THESE *#&$^%@ BOOTS OFF ME!!!!!

There was few companies that performed there..one of them got their luggage lost at the airport so a friend and I lend to the girls our costumes for their 2 nights show ! Weird to see your own dresses and shawls and shoes at work at the Spectrum without being in them ! And also,I think Canales bring his own floor...like many other wealthier groups.

I have so many fond memories of heading through those doors. RIP, Montreal's best nightclub ever.
