Brother Scott.. Nice pics! I still can't get over the scale of that pile. I wonder how they new when to build/move the tailings building. Every 20 feet in height? Ten? See what I mean?

i never thought to ask my grandpa... he worked for Republic steel right up until they pulled out for good in 72-73... For most of us here, we don't even notice it. it's just another part of the past here... I have video of my climbing this thing in June of 1990... it's taller than most people think, even looking at it from the bottom!

You should take a ride down switch back road now. Some logging out fit has logged the area around the pile really well you can see things alot better now. I chatted with one of the loggers, they have raped the land of trees pretty bad and they aren't done yet. I think that the person that is watchman for the property may be doing some double dipping. Getting paid by the company that owns the land to watch along with making some cash on the side for logging the place out. I also have found something new with the open pit in mineville across the road from the firehouse. It is almost full of water. So if you want to enter some mine shafts you better do it soon before it is completely full. It is the only place that you can get into the shafts without some climbing gear.
