  I worked with those tapes years ago. Toward the end of my employment with the bank, they were pretty much phased out.

  we started with the reals, but by the end of my time there we were down to 1 tape drive from 10. we had these IBM carts that looked like 8 tracks, each unit had 4 readers (we had 2 units, 8 readers total) i think each loader held 10 or so tapes. it was HELL when one would skip off the inside winder thing...

  Oh yeah. They were the 3480 cartridges. The 3490s had more capacity but were the same physical size. The ACLs we used (also IBM), held only 5 tapes in the stacker with an additional tape inside the drive. And yes, it was hell whenever a tape jammed.
The end of my time was when the silos were brought in. The tapes that IBM introduced for their silos were the 3590 series. Again, same physical size but their capacity was considerably higher than that of the 3490s. Memories eh?

  well my dad was a mainframe op, so as a kid i grew up playing in Petro Canadas eastern canada data center in mtl, both IBM and honeywell, was so much fun!

  that's the ones I've seen pics of, only the ones in the pics were usually blue.
