Exactly. What the hell do you call it?

People our age want to call it a steam shovel, but obviously that name isn't really right.

Shot in the dark since I don't know either. Backhoe?

Yeah, I guess so. I usually think of a backhoe as an attachment to a Caterpillar tractor, but I guess this is technically a backhoe loader.

Does anyone on this site even know who Mike Mulligan is?

excavator is the proper term for the self-propelled equipment in the picture.

Eli said, "I know who Mike Mulligan is! Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, yo!"

Fuck yeah, Mike Mulligan! The Little House was pretty goddamn dope, as well.

God I loved that Mike Mulligan book. I think that books underlying theme has probably hit a chord with anyone who is on this site. They even made an animated storybook on CD-ROM for it.

  My worthless two cents:

I have heard the above equipment refered to as a 'trackhoe' before.

I'm sure there is a joke in there, I just can't think of it right now...

Oddly enough, I did discover an actual abandoned steam shovel recently in Asheville, NC. I was thinking about adding it as a location, but it would be pretty sparse.

  but did you go in?
Posted by MutantMandias 5/20/2008 6:04 PM | remove
I did! I left an entire van full of 13 year old kids waiting while I UER'd the SHIT out of that steam shovel.

  Good man.

Is it possible to turn a steam shovel into a furnace? And wouldn't that be a sad exsistence for a steam shovel?
