This bridge was built to become a permanent Rive-sud/Mtl bridge after Expo. The plan was just to demolish the last curve and build the last portion to reach the south shore.

... and just cause I'm crazy/obsessed. left of the bridge, top island (Notre-Dame) : Place des nations, right of the bridge, same place : Lac des cygnes in construction (still there but no more swans).

I can't believe this link to the South Shore was never completed, if only with a lift section over the Seaway. I guess it's just as well. The traffic would ruin the mystique of the islands.

Any idea why it never happened maZe?

The only thing I can think of is that they thought Man and His World/Terre Des Hommes would be such a huge success it was better to keep the bridges as they were.

It might be cause Drapeau went on to try to turn Expo into a permanent thing with Terre des Hommes and when that didn't work out, he was busy with the Olympics (which didn't got built up as easy and quick as Expo, let's put it that way). I'll ask Mr. Jasmin the next time I see him...

I'm shocked the casino didn't try and have a link to the south shore put in.

the seaway authority, oops corporation now, is very fussy about crossings hence the estacade still sitting unused

Novimco wants to put a train from the south shore that stops in Griffintown.

and the big hold up is still how to get over the seaway

This calls for Bombardier's latest greatest mass transit development: The Amphi-Train 3000!

Ahahaha now not only will their planes (Q400) will fall from the sky but in the future, their trams will sink at the bottom of the seaway. YEAH!

why not go *under* the Seaway? :oP

Posted by nostra-YOUPPI! 1/21/2008 12:50 PM | remove
the seaway is 27 feet deep, the estacade meets up with the seaway dyke that is only 40 feet wide on top. they would have to start tunneling halfway out in the river to get under and the estacade is at one of the swiftest parts of the river. also at this spot the seaway is in a mud flat area, so its higher up than bedrock
