On the long section of flat north-facing wall above the main concourse windows we see the three murals by Canadian artist Frits Brandtner. These were hidden from public view by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel but, as of April, 2008, they are still there. They are in dire need of restoration, having had pipes and ducting installed near them.

Duh. I was under the impression that the hotel was built right against the north facade, but there's in fact an airwell between them. If you want to check the murals out, just go up the office stairwell near the west washrooms.

You can see an artist's renderings of the murals, dating from the time of construction of the station, as well as an alternate scheme for the station and a contemporary view, at www.archiguides.com/jcmerrett/central

If you go in the Queen E employee entrance off Belmont, hang a right to get to the stairwell that leads down to the concourse. You can see two of the murals from there, plus there's a door from the stairwell to the airwell that's unlocked. Great page, archipod.
