did you ever wonder what happened to all these independent beers that drove them out of business?

Neuweiler actually was at one time one of the largest in the country. However, they lacked the capital to advertise on a national market. When companies like Anheiser-Busch and Miller started advertising nationally it began to slowly kill Neuweiler off. The Neuweiler family noticing the business' decline tried to sell the company rather than see it destroyed. Unfortunately for them, Pennsylvania has a law that at least 51% of any brewery's ownership must live within the state, which left out the power players (monetarily speaking) from New York that were interested. Once Neweiler went bankrupt, the Ortlieb Brewing Co. of Philadelphia bought the name only (which they own to this day).
