Big, fat Pratt & Whitney R1830 radial engine...

Radial engines had the reputation, especially in the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, that they could have cylinders BLOWN off the engine and still run... this engine was rated at 1,200 hp

slick fighters like the P-51 Mustang used a liquid-cooled, inline Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that required a radiator. That radiator was in the belly of the aircraft and was a big sweet spot to get hit it.
