It's ment to be dry. The point was to let the enemy fall into the moat if they tried to get over it; if the fall didn't kill them the gunners would.

But imagine having the ground rip your foot off, or having hydrocloric acid form in your lung due to chlorine gas. There is some scary stuff out there.
