That is the end of the publicly viewable tunnel.. What is beyond the gate, I have no idea.. Maybe the tunnels to/from Citadel Hill aren't just urban legend after all..??

Did you know that back in the early 60's to early 80's, every corridor at Citadel was publicly accessible? Parks Canada just didn't want people getting hurt in the Fort George complex.

Well, every corridor except those that lead to downtown Halifax.

True that. But my guess is that they've got those bricked off now...

  For everyone's information.

The tunnel this is in is called a musketry gallery. It's a tunnel cut into the outer wall, facing into the ditch. It's sole purpose was to stock with men in the event of a siege, rifles from the tunnel could be pointed outward at enemies coming into the ditch.

On the other side of that fence is more musketry gallery. The gallery runs all the way around the outer wall of the fort. The only reason part of it is open is because a lot of it is in a dangerous state and it would be too costly to repair a tunnel that looks the same all the way around. The fence just blocks off the non-restored part from the restored tunnel.

There were small tunnels branching off from the musketry gallery, largely on the west side of the hill. They were called "mine galleries", long tunnels packed with explosive to blow the side of the hill up in case of an assault. None of these mine galleries lead any farther than halfway down the hill, most are gone now.

Iv actually been down there, the gate was busted about a year ago and I was able to get in. Very interesting, I even was able to get into the mine galleries.
