Wheel Thingy - perhaps a piece of the original mechanisms that moved the cars. There was a series of trenches within the ruins which most likely accomodated the gear to move the railcars.

depending on the location and size of the tranches they could have been work "pits" so the underside of a locomotive sould be servised. if they are anything like those in the Bayshore Roundhouse, those are work pits.
