It's hard to believe, but this was really a premium restaurant in its day. The food was excellent, the ambiance was quirky but classy, and it was THE place to go if you were looking for a good night out. Their clam chowder was legendary. Unfortunately, it turned into a real eyesore during the 15+ years it was closed, and made a rather poor first impression for visitors coming into St Charles. Alas, it's gone now... at this writing, they're still cleaning up the debris pile from the motel, but the ark is completely gone.

I remember eating at this place when I was growing up. At one time they were "known" for their gumbo

Just to keep things up to date, the site of the old Ark and motel is finally being developed, as of November '08. The tract will be turned into "The Streets of Saint Charles," a multipurpose development comprising retail, office, and residential properties. In a way, it's good to see. The Ark was an eyesore, but the vacant lot didn't look much better. Cheers, Mowog

Yet another update! ;-) It's been over a year since my last post, and not much has happened to the old Ark site. A lot of dirt has been moved around, and the planted grass everywhere to prevent erosion, but nothing's been built yet. I understand that things are still on track, but I guess the economy has had an effect on this project. The signs and earthmoving equipment are still there, though.

Another update: here's how the former Ark and Motor Lodge site looked when last photographed for Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/CMrw Work is progressing... apparently the Streets of St. Charles project got enough prospective tenants to sign on that they were given the go-ahead.
