I'm not 100% sure, but weren't the "Turners" somewhat like the Masons or Elks insomuch as they were social clubs with "rituals?" if so, this could have been some sort of "sacred" hall

No, they were a German immigrant group that set up athletic programs and the like. They had gyms, handball courts, bowling alleys, swimming pools, etc.

But yes, the turner halls were kind of social clubs as well, but they weren't all secretive or mysterious.
