someone forgot to take their hopper...

Wouldn't that be fun to push down the track. That is if it is empty, and if you can somehow manage to move it, but how would you stop it?

Just push it into the stopper at the end of the tracks. You know if the brakes aren't set, the wind can push rail cars?

True, the line stops somewhere, I just assumed the tracks go through this building. It doesn't suprise me that wind would have enough force to do that.

where i work, i take the railcars in and one of the biggest things is to chock the cars... from the railshed it's a grade and the cars will take off on you if you don't set the brake or chock them...

What is it about them though that makes them so easy to move? I think of them as big heavy containers. I guess they are on wheels so they'll use any momentum they get. A neat thing to watch is the "hill" or hump in the sorting yard for UP I think in Nebraska?

despite all the weight, the point of contact on the rail is about the size of a dime

Plus the fact that tracks are built to be as level as possible. It would be hard to get it rolling but once you did, it's weight would make it easy to keep it rolling.

stopping it would be possible as there is a hand/parking brake on railcars. It's a wheelie thing. It also has a quick release on the chain reel.

I've seen people leave some crazy stuff in abandonments, but a rail road car?!?!? This takes the cake.

It makes me wonder if someone somewhere is thinking ...."Now where did we leave that rail car?"

UP is always losing cars. I bet they were throwing scap in this one.
