  That's the patent date. It could've been made well after that. Still quite old.

  You are correct. It is U.S. Patent No. 1,014,664 issued on January 16, 1912 to inventor Phillip A. Myers. The invention is in the clever rack-and-gear segment at the top of the mechanism. You can almost see it in pic #8; the gear segment is hidden behind the connecting arms.
