Stamps that crush mineral ore. It was a big method in western mills, and was used most often in relation to gold and silver ore I believe. Jonsered probably has more info on the topic.

This were fairly simple. The ore was fed into the hopper, and came down into the path of these stamps. They just moved up under steam power, and were then driven down under power again, crushing the rock. Rapcw is right that they were very common forgold and solver, but they were used to some extent in almost all mining. Stamp mills were common in varieties from 5 to 40 stamps, a stamp being one of the iron shafts with its head. Very nifty machine!
