interesting...looks like the metal netting was put in place to prevent people from entering the tunnel? although I am sure one could cut through that netting with some cutters or a hack saw ...

Actually, I was admiring the fact that they used iron rungs on the ladder vs wood rungs. Even if you did fall, you could climb back out.

The ladder is very likely NPS equipment, but the wood around the shaft seems original but of a newer construction. So this shaft may only be about 50 years old. :)
