most tanks are left in the ground. Up here in NY, before you sell the property, the NYSDEC makes you dig them [the tanks] up, hazmat the dirt and then fill it back in with clean dirt. A gigantic pain in the ass.

My parents bought a house in TX with tons of land... There used to be a gas station there and the previous owners just plowed it down and left the tanks in the ground... Well, 20+ years later all the wells in the area are contaminated and the state spent 2 years digging up my parents yard...
