  Little known fact: steam pipe fitters are required to be members of an ultra secret ritualistic society. They bend their pipes as a sign of respect and admiration for their plump and curvaceous goddess 'ohm'.

That, and it allows the pipes to expand without cracking.

  These pipes may go from room temperature to 900F during plant startup. That's a large temperature range over which the pipes can grow several inches longer. As E. Wang said above, these loops allow the pipes to lengthen and contract.
