Pits had a bad habit of collecting flammable vapors and exploding or asphyxiating mechanics, now there are very stringent laws regarding their use, so you only really see them in oil change places.

my friend Leroys' shop was a Pontiac and Willys dealer back in the day and the only reason that his shop is still allowed to have a pit is that it has two exits and vents directly to the outside... there is something very disconcerting about driving a car over a pit, especially if you aren't sure your car is wide enough for it!
