However, I must admit that this particular car is quite ugly...

That's because the 80's were the Dark Ages of modern society: Sex, Drugs, Rock'n'Roll, Big Hair, Flock of Seagulls, and crazily designed cars....like the Dome Zero and DeLorean S2!

I have an article clipped from a 1982 issue of Car & Driver and in it, there is a sidebar interview with Jack Telnack who was Ford North Americas' chief designer through the 80's. In that interview there was a reasoning for this design and, despite being a two-seater, these cars sold ok, about as well as the competitors in the market (Pontiac Fiero, Toyota MR2, Nissan Pulsar/NX2000, Chevy Chevette Scooter)

Personally, I liked these cars, they just needed more go. I will agree with you Nootz that the early 80's were dark days for the american auto industry. Although, by 1985, it was coming around again. If there was one success story from the 1980's, it was Ford, seconded only by Chryslers' well-financed bail-out and subsequent turnaround.
