Clay Plumes (or Dolimes) like this are vertical cylinders of clay in the sandstone. Here very close to the surface, as the roots show. With heavy rain these can get instable and a local collapse happens. At the surface you get a deep and steep funnel-like hole, sometimes 10 metres deep.
