If it's in the shape of little beads with about the same consistency as wet sand, then it's probably ion exchange resin, used mainly for water softening. There's a pile of it on the main floor of the Dow.

HM...hard to say..I haven't seen anything like this (this shining colour though ) at Dow..And it was like microscopic but yes,wet sand.....makes sense..but in the steam tunnel ?

It's been a couple of years, but I think it was in one of the rooms north of the compressor room. As for this place, I don't know what the stuff would be doing in a steam tunnel, but from the other pictures, they definitely processed water here. Probably to keep the calcium deposits from building up in the heating system.

Les billes oranges, elles étaient près de la "compressor room", en bas d'une petite pente près de la porte de garage. Mais ça probablement été nettoyé depuis...
