They would often make people wait in line while they checked on an item only to be told awhile later that the item wasn't in stock. They had huge problems with their inventory because they had no way to track anything. This made Consumers a huge shoplifting target amnd eventually made the stores start computerizing stock levels in 1988. FYI - Shirley Jones once did a commercial for Consumers Distributing.
