Get your Ham Radio License and you can talk to anyone across the US or the world on radio or on landline. Forget Nextel. Radio comm is the way, especially when the power goes out, your radio will be the most reliable source there is.

I would be much more interested in using ham as a worldwide com channel for myself if i was allowed to encyrpt things. I'll stick with voip for anything important, and ham for emergency work.
