Perhaps some scrap metal value to someone?

Maybe. When I visited in 1995 the covers were next to the manholes, but now they've gone. A lot of stuff appears to have been taken by scrap metal collectors.

Not so long back there were people stealing road signs for the scrap metal.

Could start again soon with scrap metal values rocketing (scrap steel went from virtually zilch to £170 a ton)

Presumably that is £170/ton for clean, selected steel? A truckload of random stuff wouldn't fetch that price, surely?
