Could be some kind of dairy equipment. Looks familiar, but I can't quite place it.

is it something for sending phone or electrical wires out in different directions?

The idea of a device for supporting wires seems likely, doesn't it? But I've never seen one quite like this before. Telephone poles usually just have a large ring which all the wires are attached to. That stuff wrapped around it isn't telephone cable or power cable, either - it's much too thin. The mystery continues...

Were the cables coming out of it or just wrapped around it? With the orientation of the "heads" of the spokes it looks like it possibly was used to distribute or combine liquids.

Just wrapped it I think.

Hrm...could also be gas distribution for pasteurization or other treatments...

I'm doubtful about it being a piece of food processing machinery. I'd expect food processing machinery to be made from stainless steel. Also this doesn't appear to have a seal at the hub, nor does it appear to be intended to rotate. I'm in favour of it being some kind of cable or guy rope support, but I'm by no means certain.

That looks like some kind of gas distributor.
The cable router theory doesn't really ring true to me, because it looks like a total bastard to get even ONE cable routed through, let alone a bundle, eh?
Further, that's a rather large flange on there to seal cables in... Looks more like a gas seal.
Cool object anyways! :-D

I think some kind of gas distributor is the best guess.

Let's just put it this way: 'FLANGE!!'
:-))

I think it's for liquids. Looking at the flange, it could easily be removed, to be cleaned. My guess is that a standing pipe stood in the center and this thing could fill up 8 bottles or cans at the same time, production-line style

It could have been for washing bottles, I guess?

With a flange like that, it seems likely, yeah.
