On the beams - remains of late 19th century/early 20th century 'knob-and-tube' wiring system - bare wires passed through ceramic tubes drilled into wood members, turned corners at ceramic knobs. Extremely dangerous, was outlawed in both US and Canada.

The wires weren't normally bare...unless rats chewed through the insulation. I've removed tonnes of the stuff, it's normally covered in fibre and pitch, probably hemp fibre.

Also, I don't think its been outlawed, you just can't install any more of it. Insurance companies are pushing people to replace it though, as it is really quite dangerous. It heats up quite a bit.

Exactly PT. Friends of mine bought a house that was built in the early 20s. It had knob and tube wiring that was modified by an amateur during the 70s. It was in really bad shape that the insurance company refused coverage until it was replaced. It was covered by a fibre insulation.
The electrician who replaced it said it heated up quickly because it couldn't handle the load for today's demands.

It's outlawed today, but when properly installed in it's original fashion,it was a safe wiring system. The bad rap comes from running todays appliances off of it adn tagging new circuits off existing runs, which lead to overheating of the wires and the low-temp insulation.
And checkout those porcelian fuse holders on the far wall. How would you like to grope around in the dark for those fuses?

Nice! I explored this place around 2002. I might have some photos from that exploration. Now I must try to find them.

rainman8889 I can't imagine a K&T system modified in the 70s in the heydey of aluminum wiring. Game over. The house is burning down.
