Im pretty sure thats pumped through the cooling system. I think those are compressors.

I would say boilers, but those PVC pipes don't tolerate heat too well.

those aren't pvc pipes... thier insulated. Look to the far left of the pic at where the pipes emerge from the insulation...

Ahh...the asbestos makes it look like PVC. Since those doors open, what was put in there? And did the pipes feed or take from those chambers?

Those are indeed boilers, not compressors. Ammonia is used in low temperature refrigeration applications (like cold storage!) but it is likely that any ammonia refrigerant would have completely leaked out long ago. Can't imagine why you could still smell it in this building!

There is indeed ammonia still in there. The boiler room doesn't have the strongest scent though... the room with all the red-painted equipment is extremely saturated with ammonia! (And yes, it used to be used for refrigeration) I found that on significantly cooler days the ammonia is less present in there. Stay away unless you are familiar with chemical safety-- specifically ammonia! :-) (also keep in mind, it's combustible)
