this is also known as a "widows walk", where women could watch for their husbands ship to come in from the sea. (or lake ontario)

I thought a widow's walk was more like a roof-top deck used for that purpose.

You have to go up a ladder threw the attic to get to that room. Its a lookout room. its about 6'X6' its not open air. It overlooks Lake Ontario, so maybe the wife sat up there waiting for her husbands ship to come in.

When I typed this stuff, I was reflecting back to a grade 13 19th century Architecture unit from history, which was a while ago. Yokes, you are correct sir (or mam). I Apologize for screwing up the best course I took in High School.

Well after you've finished dusting everything 20 times and have made clothes to last you and your family for the next 5 years, and since you don't have the internet or tv, what else are you going to do?

I think you are both right - there's a world wide debate on widow's walks - widow looking for hubby is the romantic (and who doesn't love romance?) tale but it's also a Greek/Italian ornate design which became popular everywhere. Some were also built around a chimney to make it easy to run up and pour sand down to put out a pipe fire. (One time my sister was living with me and was talking to our Nana and asked her what to do as the chimney was on fire - Nana said: "Call the fire rails" and hung up. My sis had no idea what that was and called me at work. Luckily, her boyfriend was there and by the time she got off the phone he'd run up on the roof with a garden hose in tow. In colder climates they were sometimes closed in. This house might have a cupola which is, to me, just about the same thing but not back and forth walkable - more like in circles lol. Great house and great pics - so grateful to all who got pics before the house was destroyed.
