In the 60s and even later, people would dress formally more than you would expect today.

I remember going to opera as a kid and ladies would wear evening gowns and gloves...and fancy fans when it was very warm...it was so glamourous !!! And men with tux....

even in the 80s a tie was de rigeur in most offices for men!

Clip on's! Na, although I do get pissed off because we have a business dress code, but go to our HQ and i'ts all business casual, kinda sucks.

I'm in a call center and have to wear business casual. Why? My sister pointed out that people who attended The Price is Right tapings used to dress up back in the day but now its everyday clothing.
