you would be surprised at the logevity of these kind of hulls that were riveted, the lap joints on the steel were a lot less susceptible to damage in the seaway, especially the stresses of locking. there are quite a few left, the new welded steel hulls have a much shorter lifespan and it isnt unusual to have them go into drydock after 20 years for a forebody replacement
